Reid Castle Events (Manhattanville University)

The 1866 Lady Chapel on the campus was restored by Maya Lin, and a booking takes the castle’s whole first floor plus the garden terraces for the day.

Reid Castle was designed by Stanford White and built in 1892, with grounds laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted. It is a National Historic Landmark. It sits on Manhattanville University’s 100 acre campus at 2900 Purchase Street. The university caters one wedding per day and says so twice on its own pages. The West Room, which it also calls the Grand Ballroom, measures 78 by 29 feet and seats a maximum of 180. The East Room at Benziger Hall runs 132 by 50 feet and seats up to 375 across three rooms. The O’Byrne Chapel, built in 1961, seats up to 1,200. There are nine event locations in all, over 7,500 square feet. Catering is on site, with chefs the university says are brought in from New York City, and a day of coordinator is available. Pricing is where it thins out. The university publishes no per person rate and no venue fee. The only figure anywhere is a $6,500 first floor venue fee on Eventective, explicitly labeled 2024 to 2025, which makes it two academic years old.

One wedding a day and a room of known dimensions are real first party facts. They are worth more than most of what venues publish. The money is missing. The single fee in circulation is a marketplace figure the listing itself dates to 2024 and 2025, so it is two academic years old and should not anchor your budget. On a tour, ask for the current first floor venue fee, the per person catering rate at your guest count, who the on site caterer actually is, whether outside caterers are permitted, and what time the music has to stop.

The Reid Castle Events index, about, weddings and venue rentals pages at mville.edu, the old Conference and Event Services URL that now redirects there, the Eventective listing for Reid Castle Events in Purchase, and Eventective’s White Plains wedding venue directory. All read 11 September 2026. Checked September 2026. First party means the business’s own site or rate card. Marketplace means The Knot, WeddingWire, Zola, Wedding Spot or similar. Nothing here is averaged or estimated.

The only published price, a $6,500 first floor venue fee, is explicitly a 2024 to 2025 figure and is two academic years old. Do not budget from it.

One wedding a day, published twice

The university states that it hosts one reception per day so the couple and their party can arrive early to dress, take photographs or simply sit down. The rentals page repeats it in plainer terms: the policy is to cater only one wedding per day.

That is a first party statement from an institution rather than a marketplace inference, which makes it one of the more solid facts in this file. Early access for dressing and pre wedding photographs is part of the same promise.

Stanford White built it and Olmsted laid out the grounds

The estate began with Whitelaw Reid, owner of the New York Tribune, and his wife Elizabeth, who from 1888 transformed their country house. White’s 1892 castle is the result. Interiors include original chambers imported from historic French chateaux. The property carries National Historic Landmark designation.

The campus adds two chapels. The Lady Chapel, Norman Gothic in style, was built by Ben Holladay for his wife in 1866 and restored by the architect Maya Lin in 2004. The O’Byrne Chapel dates from 1961, seats up to 1,200 and has built in wireless sound.

The only price anywhere is two academic years old

Eventective lists a first floor venue fee of $6,500 per event and labels it 2024 to 2025 on the listing itself. The university publishes no venue fee, no per person catering rate, no food and beverage minimum and no service charge. A catering menu is referenced on the public pages without prices.

Treat the $6,500 as a historical data point rather than a quote. It tells you roughly what order of magnitude the first floor rental sat at two years ago, and nothing about what it costs now.

The West Room seats 180, or 170, depending on the source

The university gives the West Room at 78 by 29 feet with a maximum of 180 seated. Eventective summarizes the castle as 170 guests maximum across five function rooms totaling 7,500 square feet. Both are recorded here.

The room dimensions are the more useful number. A space 78 feet by 29 feet is long and narrow, which shapes where you can put a band, where the dance floor goes and where the head table sits. Ask to see a layout at your guest count before you commit.

The whole first floor of the castle comes with the booking

The Shakespearean decor rooms of the castle’s first floor, plus the garden terraces and the patio, are part of what you take for the day. That is why the Eventective fee is described as a first floor venue fee rather than a ballroom rental.

Other bookable spaces across the campus include the Ophir Dining Room and Annex for meetings and smaller dinners, and the East Room at Benziger Hall for larger seated events. Nine locations in total, on a 100 acre campus.

The terraces have no weather policy and the campus keeps office hours

Terraces and a patio are offered for outdoor use and no weather contingency is published. The first floor rooms are the obvious fallback, but the university has not written that down, and neither has anyone else.

No end time or curfew is published either. The Conference and Event Services office runs Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, which is when you will reach someone to ask.

The campus itself is the other scheduling question. Nothing is published about how commencement, reunions, move in weekends or exam periods sit against wedding dates, and on a working campus they generally do. Ask about the date before you ask about the room.

Ask too whether parking is shared with a campus event that weekend, and whether the O’Byrne Chapel or the East Room at Benziger Hall can be held alongside the castle if your guest count outgrows the West Room’s 180.

The URL changed and so did the university’s name

The events program moved to a Reid Castle Events section of the site, and older links to the Conference and Event Services pages now redirect there. Anything you find under the old path is likely to be out of date.

The institution also rebranded from Manhattanville College to Manhattanville University, so coverage older than a couple of years uses the former name. Named events staff on the current pages are live, and the program is confirmed operating as of 11 September 2026.
